Independent Educational Evaluations

An Independent Educational Evaluation (IEE) is a specific evaluation defined within the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). It is usually pursued when a parent/guardian disagrees with the scope or findings of the school-based evaluation. The purpose of an IEE is to provide the parent and the school with an independent and unbiased professional opinion. The purpose of the evaluation is to gain a better understanding of a student’s cognitive and learning profile and how the profile may impact learning and education. The evaluation also seeks to clarify eligibility for special education services under IDEA.

The scope of the evaluation is individually determined and focused to address the concerns identified by the parent and the school and may include assessment of global and specific cognitive and learning-related processes, executive functions, academic skill development, and social, emotional, and behavioral functioning. The results are interpreted within the context of the student's developmental, health, school history, personal background, and experiences, as well as and information gathered through clinical and school-based observations, and parent and teacher input.

The evaluation also provides recommendations relevant to programming, instruction, interventions, and supports which can help guide the parent, student, and school in educational decision-making.

The standard rate for an IEE is $4000 but may be higher or lower depending on the scope of the evaluation.

The exact cost is determined before the evaluation begins.
